The short answer is yes, and far earlier than most visitors expect. The Old Course is a public links, so anyone can play it, but demand vastly outstrips the roughly 40,000 to 45,000 rounds available each year. Understanding how the three routes onto the course actually work will save you a lot of disappointment when you arrive in Fife.
Almost every visitor gets a tee time through one of three routes, and they operate on completely different timescales. Knowing which one applies to you determines whether you should be booking now or next week.
The daily ballot is the free option and the one most people use. You enter with your group (two to four players) by around 2pm two days before you want to play, and results are published that afternoon on the St Andrews Links website and outside the Links Clubhouse. It costs nothing to enter, but success rates in peak season are low, and it is worth being blunt about that: many groups enter every day of a week's trip and never come out.
If the Old Course is the reason for the trip, work backwards from about eighteen months. Advance tee time applications for the following year typically open in late summer, so a group wanting July or August needs to be applying nearly a full year in advance and still be prepared for a no.
Shoulder season is genuinely easier. April, early May and October see far more ballot success than the mid June to late August window, and the weather on the East Neuk in early autumn is often better than people fear. The course also closes to visitors on Sundays, which surprises a lot of first timers, so never build an itinerary around a Sunday round.
Tour operators and hotel packages can offer guaranteed tee times, but these are bundled with accommodation and other courses and priced accordingly. They are legitimate, but you are paying a premium for certainty rather than buying a shortcut nobody else has.
The sensible approach is to build a trip that stands on its own without the Old Course, then treat a ballot win as a bonus. The other six links courses on the St Andrews Links complex, plus Kingsbarns, Crail Balcomie and the Fairmont, are all bookable with far more certainty and much shorter lead times.
The New Course and Jubilee in particular are respected in their own right and sit on the same stretch of coast. Green fees across the Fife courses vary widely by season and course, so check current rates directly rather than relying on figures quoted in older guides.
A handicap certificate is required for the Old Course, with limits that are usually 24 for men and 36 for women, and you should carry proof rather than assume you will be asked to self declare. Caddies are booked separately and also get scarce in peak weeks.
Because ballot results only land two days ahead, your ground transport needs to be flexible. A confirmed 7.10am time at Kingsbarns and a surprise 2.40pm at the Old Course on the same day is a real scheduling problem if you are relying on taxis at short notice.
Very occasionally, yes, if you are a single golfer willing to queue at the starter's box from very early morning and take whatever gap appears. It is not a reliable plan for a group and should never be your main strategy.
Yes, entering the ballot costs nothing. You only pay the green fee if your name comes out, and you can enter on multiple days of your trip to improve your overall chances.
April, early May and October give noticeably better odds than high summer, and midweek beats weekends. Remember the Old Course is closed to visitor play on Sundays all year.
