Ask three companies what a private golf tour of Scotland costs and you will get three very different numbers, because most of the spend is not the tour at all. It is green fees, hotels and caddies, and those swing enormously depending on which courses you want and what month you come. Here is what the money actually goes on, based on how trips out of St Andrews and the East Neuk tend to be built.
Green fees are usually 50 to 70 per cent of a golf trip's total cost, so everything else follows from your course list. In peak season, the Old Course at St Andrews sits around £320 per round, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie's Championship course are broadly in the £250 to £350 bracket, and Muirfield and Royal Dornoch are in similar territory. Turnberry and Trump International sit at the top end.
The good news is that Fife is full of excellent golf at a fraction of that. The Jubilee, Eden and Castle courses in St Andrews run roughly £45 to £130 depending on the course and month, Crail's Balcomie Links is around £100 in summer, and Elie, Lundin Links, Leven and Scotscraig all offer genuine championship-standard links for £70 to £120. A week mixing two or three marquee rounds with four honest local links costs far less than seven headline rounds and is often the better golf trip.
This is the part we can speak to directly. Private chauffeured transport in Scotland typically works out at roughly £400 to £700 per day for a driven executive vehicle or minibus, covering the driver, the vehicle, fuel and clubs. Split across a group of six or eight, that is often £60 to £90 per person per day, which is comparable to hiring cars once you add insurance, parking and the fact that somebody has to stay off the whisky.
Distance matters more than people expect. A day out of St Andrews to Carnoustie or Kingsbarns is short and cheap. Muirfield and the Gullane courses are about ninety minutes each way. A run to Royal Dornoch is four hours in each direction and realistically needs an overnight rather than a day return, which changes the cost structure entirely.
Caddies are the most commonly underestimated line. Budget around £60 to £70 per caddie per round plus a customary tip of £20 to £40, so a foursome taking caddies for six rounds can add well over £2,000 to the trip. They are worth it on the Old Course and on any blind links you have not played, and easily skippable elsewhere.
Accommodation in St Andrews ranges from around £120 a night for a good guest house to £500 plus at the Old Course Hotel or Rusacks in high summer. Add club hire if you are flying light, roughly £50 to £75 per set per round, and factor in that the Old Course ballot or an Old Course Experience package can shift your costs substantially depending on how you secure the tee time.
For a group of eight staying in St Andrews for four nights with private transport throughout, a sensible planning range is £1,400 to £2,200 per person if you play mid-tier Fife links with one premium round, and £3,000 to £4,500 per person if the Old Course, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie are all on the list with caddies and a five-star hotel. Flights are extra.
If someone quotes you a firm all-in price months ahead without asking which courses you want and when you are travelling, be sceptical. Nobody can pin down a golf tour cost until the tee times are confirmed, because the tee times are the budget.
On paper yes, for a group of two or three. Once you are four or more, and factoring in insurance, city parking and someone remaining sober at the nineteenth hole, driven transport is usually within a few pounds per head and considerably less hassle.
Twelve to eighteen months for peak-season rounds at the marquee courses, as tee times rather than price are the constraint. For Fife's local links, three to six months is plenty, and booking April or October instead of July can save you a third.
Comfortably. Basing yourself in St Andrews and playing the Eden, Jubilee, Crail, Elie and Scotscraig gives you five days of proper links golf for less than one round on some of the famous names.
